Tonight, Friday, May 1: Atlantic City Casinos Light Up Green to Mark the Beginning of Mental Health Awareness Month in May

Atlantic City, NJ – This evening Atlantic City casinos will light up green in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, helping to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and show support for those affected by mental health conditions.

“Lighting up green reflects the Atlantic City casino industry’s commitment to individuals and families impacted by mental health challenges,” said George Goldhoff, president of the Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ). “Mental health is a vital part of overall well-being, and it is essential that we continue to promote understanding and support those in need.”

The Casino Association of New Jersey (CANJ) announced that six properties – Borgata Hotel & Casino, Caesars Atlantic City, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Ocean Casino Resort, Resorts Casino Hotel, and Tropicana Atlantic City – will illuminate their exteriors in green as a symbol of hope, strength, and support for mental health initiatives.

Atlantic City casinos are joining more than 200 iconic landmarks across the country that will be lit in green, the color of mental health awareness, to mark the beginning of Mental Health Month in May. This annual effort, championed by Mental Health America (MHA), aims to promote public understanding, conversation, and care for mental well-being.

“Around the city, you’ll see green magnets on patrol cars with stigma free messaging,” said Vicki Phillips, Executive Director of The Mental Health Association in Atlantic County, which operates a community wellness center in Atlantic City. “The library agreed to set up a table with mental health resources and information. We are really pleased with all the support we received from the city.”

Visual cues and messaging are reminders for residents to prioritize mental health, practice good wellness, and normalize asking for help.

Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in May since 1949 to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans’ lives, and to celebrate recovery from mental illness. More than one in five U.S. adults will experience a mental health condition each year, and 50% of people in their lifetime.

This past September, the Atlantic City casino industry came together to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s (AFSP) “Out of the Darkness Community Walk.” Participation in the event was spearheaded by Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City team members and included over 750 participants from all Atlantic City casino properties. The 2025 walk marked the 7th year the industry participated in the walk, underscoring its shared commitment to mental health advocacy and suicide prevention.
